We grow from the inside out…

Wealthy people, and I mean people who are truly wealthy in all areas, don’t allow others to determine the quality of their lives. They never allow circumstances or others to determine how much income they earn or their level of harmony with regard to their spiritual life, their health, their relationships–anything.

To have more you must be more.

If your intention is big enough, then you must grow to meet the size of that idea. Similarly, if you have an idea that doesn’t cause you to grow, it isn’t the right idea. In other words, the right intention and the right desire have to make you stretch.

Growing is an inside job. Once you begin to go inside–involution–and grow, your results on the outside–evolution–must happen. Going within leads you to take different actions; your goal begins to take form and ultimately becomes a result in your life.

When you achieve the desired result, what happens?

“What’s next?” happens, doesn’t it? The basic principle of life, of spirit, is fuller expression and expansion. Your results become the springboard for fuller expression, which then brings grander, more exciting ideas and goals into view. Are you with me?

Once you get that next idea or desire–the intention–you again have to grow to meet the size of that new idea, so involution kicks in all over again. New actions begin to happen and your new bigger idea starts coming into form. You get new results, and so on. This is really simple, but its how the creative process works: inside out, involution always preceding evolution.

Think back on any goal you’ve achieved, and you’ll see that this cycle occurred.

You had an idea, a desire, and you had to grow to reach it. Perhaps it was when you got your first car loan or first home mortgage.

Now, if that payment was a stretch for you, you had to expand your vision of yourself, didn’t you? You had to see yourself being able to reach for more than you had been accessing. You had to realign your possibilities to meet the size of the idea.

What you need isn’t more money but more growth. We all do.

Money is nothing more than a measuring stick of our growth.

Doing Better Than Good! By Zig Ziglar

Doing Better Than Good!
People frequently ask me, “How can I know when I am doing better than good?” I thought about that question and came up with 15 ways to measure yourself. Take a look and see what you think:

You are doing better than good when you clearly understand that failure is an event, not a person; that yesterday ended last night, and today is your brand new day.

You are doing better than good when you have made friends with your past, are focused on the present, and optimistic about your future.

You are doing better than good when you know that success (a win) doesn’t make you, and failure (a loss) doesn’t break you.

You are doing better than good when you are filled with faith, hope and love; and live without anger, greed, guilt, envy or thoughts of revenge.

You are doing better than good when you are mature enough to delay gratification and shift your focus from your rights to your responsibilities.

You are doing better than good when you know that failure to stand for what is morally right is the prelude to being the victim of what is criminally wrong.

You are doing better than good when you are secure in who you are, so you are at peace with God and in fellowship with man.

You are doing better than good when you have made friends of your adversaries, and have gained the love and respect of those who know you best.

You are doing better than good when you understand that others can give you pleasure, but genuine happiness comes when you do things for others.

You are doing better than good when you are pleasant to the grouch, courteous to the rude, and generous to the needy.

You are doing better than good when you love the unlovable, give hope to the hopeless, friendship to the friendless, and encouragement to the discouraged.

You are doing better than good when you can look back in forgiveness, forward in hope, down in compassion, and up with gratitude.

You are doing better than good when you know that “he who would be the greatest among you must become the servant of all.”

You are doing better than good when you recognize, confess, develop and use your God-given physical, mental and spiritual abilities to the glory of God and for the benefit of mankind.

You are doing better than good when you stand in front of the Creator of the universe and He says to you, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”

Think over each one of these 15 ideas and see how you can incorporate them into your life so that you truly are better than good!

Jeffrey Gitomer’s - Little Gold Book of YES! Attitude

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Jeffrey Gitomer's Little Gold Book of YES! AttitudeI don’t know if I’ve ever seen a book so appropriately named in my life. I’m sure I’ve never seen one embrace its subject with so much passion and conviction. The Little Gold Book of YES! Attitude: How to Find, Build and Keep a YES! Attitude for a Lifetime of SUCCESS (Jeffrey Gitomer’s Little Books) is a colorul, positive, infectious, uplifting, enjoyable, motivating, delightful little book.
Did I like it? I loved it. I loved everything about it.

I had finished reading the stack of books on my desk - some were for reviewing on blogs, others were novels by favorite fiction authors (Dean Koontz, Agatha Christie). Since I always, always, always have to be in the middle of at least one book to feel content, I headed to my husband’s bookshelf, knowing he had gotten a few books lately. Even though his books are mostly about golfing, business, and sales (not the kind of sales I’m interested in), every now and then he’ll have one that matters to me. This gold little book caught my eye right off the bat, as did the tile on the side, “Jeffrey Gitomer’s Little Gold Book of YES! Attitude.” It was love at first sight. Colorful? Check. Bold? Check. Stand out in the crowd? Check. Motivationally positive? Check. Check.

I plucked the book out from amongst books that were either in business suits or golf shoes and headed to the couch with my notebook and pen (taken from the husband’s desk…just call me Sticky Fingers). The little gold book and I got along famously and the pen got a real workout.

The book is full of adorable cartoon illustrations that’ll slap a smile on your face, and varying sizes and colors of text that make the entire reading process nothing short of delightful.

Jeffrey Gitomer makes it clear early in the book that we are responsible for our own attitudes. The kind of attitude we have is a choice we make, so if we want a YES! attitude, we have to make the choice to go out there and get it! He then spends the rest of the book telling the reader exactly how to do just that.

It’s your thoughts behind the words you speak that create your attitude. - Jeffrey Gitomer

There’s a fascinating “Attitude Self Test” that I wish everyone in the world could take. Without even looking at the results, the reader could have about 10, “A ha!” moments where they gain a little insight about themselves and their attitude. After the test, you can find out where, on the scale, your attitude rates - you’ll either be in the positive attitude group with the rest of us Jiminey Crickets, in the group that’ll have to work extra hard, or somewhere in between. Wherever you find yourself, you’ll be able to use the rest of the book to move higher and stay higher.

On page 47, the author pointed out something really interesting, “It takes twice as much energy to be negative than to be positive. That’s why, at the end of the argument, you may be tired.” He then went on to say, “Understand that negative energy and negative thoughts BLOCK positive thoughts and creative thoughts from occurring.”

Priceless! How priceless? Worth saying again priceless:

“Understand that negative energy and negative thoughts BLOCK positive thoughts and creative thoughts from occurring.”

Another especially effective part of the book (you know, in addition to the part between the first page and the last page) is a section where he lists the “Real World Attitude Busters.” From The flu (which I happened to be enjoying when I read the book) to losing something, the list hits home for everyone. He points out that Attitude Busters have two elements: Things and People. These elements will, as the book points out, either “…bust you or build you based on the way you react to them.”

Page 76 is one of the most powerful pages of the entire book, as it gives a list of “Positive things and YES! things that BUST attitude busters.” At first I was aghast that Starbucks and shopping weren’t listed, until I saw, “Something that you do with passion” and ”Anything inspirational” - yeah, that’s them. It’s a great list of things that can turn your attitude, mood, day and life around - which, if you ask me, makes it a list worth making copies of and placing randomly throughout your house. One on the refrigerator, one on your desk (definitely one on your desk!), etc.

The Little Gold Book of YES! Attitude: How to Find, Build and Keep a YES! Attitude for a Lifetime of SUCCESS (Jeffrey Gitomer’s Little Books)will also show you why it’s important to:

  • Put things into writing
  • Drain your brain at the end of each day
  • Use your environment to your benefit
  • Be careful how you view the local news
  • Be on guard how you let others affect your attitude
  • Be aware of the senses that can affect your attitude
  • Use your attitude to improve your business
  • Use your attitude to improve your relationships and life
  • Realize that a positive attitude is attractive
  • Realize that a positive attitude is contagious
  • Buy the book!
  • Read the book!
  • Re-read the book!

“The main reason people rain on my parade is because they have no parade of their own.” - Jeffrey Gitomer

The title of this site is Self Help Daily, right? The goal of this blogger is to help others help themselves. I literally devote each day looking for information, tips, advice, quotes, etc that I can add to the web site that will help others build the life that will bring them the most happiness. My husband says I’m out to save the world. My response? Damn right! One person, one animal, and one tree at a time. I’m a proud hugger of each. Having said all of that, at this moment the number one thing I wish I could do for every human being (Polar Bears and Oaks simply don’t read well enough) is to lock them in a room with this book, one of my husband’s cool pens and a notebook. When I unlocked the door a few hours later, each would emerge a changed person. For the better.

The door wouldn’t be the only thing unlocked. The book would brilliantly, and forever, unlock their….

Cultivate a Positive Mind-Set Through Meditation

Friday, May 9th, 2008

You have the ability to create your own mind-set. Whether your attitude is positive or negative, is up to you. The ability to change your environment, circle of friends, and attitude, is within your control.

Just like a computer absorbs raw data, so does your mind.
Within your mind a culture, within itself, has grown. Many people feel like they have no control of their own mind, because this culture has become negative. The negativity is a result of past experiences, being in a negative environment, or being under the influence of unconstructive ideas.

Similar to a computer virus, you have to identify it quickly, to avoid letting it spread within your mind. You can also pass this virus of negative thinking to people around you. As a result you are spreading negative energy around, like “weeds in a field.”

Much like a farmer, you cultivate too. The energy in your mind is the crop, and it is up to you, whether it is weeds or wheat. If you have a farm and let a field take care of itself; you will be lucky to have any kind of a crop, from it. This is the same with the energy within your mind.

You have to option to pick quality seeds: Information, in the form of books, eBooks, DVD’s, CD’s, lectures, courses, workshops, and seminars. This is learning, for the sake of self-improvement, and it results in a positive mind-set.

However, your work is not finished, because you must still reinforce the lessons, and keep everything in a focused order. This might be compared to fertilizing, watering, and “weeding the mind.” You have to work at it continually or the weeds will grow back. This, my friend, is meditation, and one of the reasons why we meditate, in the first place.

Meditation is controlled focus on an object, thought, or task without judgment. This process makes it possible to look at all situations objectively. You can find solutions, turn negative situations into positive learning experiences, and create your own positive mindset. As a result of this you will make new friends, reach goals, handle problems easily, and develop an indomitable spirit.

Remember the last time you made an accomplishment. That feeling, and that ability, are within all of us. It is a formula for success, but you have to take action. Action is something that the vast majority of people will never take.
Learn to separate yourself from “the pack,” through education, meditation, and action.

You Tube saw downtime, why people seek alternatives to You Tube

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

This morning around 9:14 am est, the  internet’s video sharing site You Tube faced a significant amount of downtime, for almost 10 min. the site was down. What was the problem? All the thousands and millions of other websites out there who have business pendant if not lost due to the downtime. They embed their videos, entrusting the service, to have their videos down as well.

People seek alternatives to You Tube to get a better range of videos that appeal to their lifestyle.

Many popular alternatives are veoh.com , GodTube .com is a video-driven social network where users can explore their faith and the tenets of Christianity. Metacafe is one of the world’s largest video sites, attracting more than 25 million unique viewers each month, they specialize in short-form original content - from new, emerging talents and established Hollywood heavyweights alike.  MySpaceTV where you can find many tv show episodes. You can also watch full tv show episodes on the channels own website, like abc.com, cbs.com, tbs.com, usanetwork.com. Also some radio stations are now broadcasting their own Internet T.V. Channels. 97.1 FM features 24/7 hip-hop & R&B music videos on hot97.com , seeing that most of today’s music video channels, like MTV don’t always broadcast what they are supposed to, music videos.

BetterDaysTV.net features the internet’s largest free Success and Self Improvement Internet TV Channel. They have been growing very rapidly over the past few months since launch. They have over 500 videos to provide an alternative to today’s common t.v. programming. That is in providing people a way to look at tv as an informative, uplifting, and motivational ways to guide them to Better Days ahead. They’ve broadcasted to over 200,000 unique visitors since February 2008.  They have allowed their users to even share their favorite videos, and add them to the community, and gain monetization through Google advertisements.

The problem: Large video sites like You Tube makes millions and billions of dollars off advertising from the people’s work, videos. New sites like GetPaid2YouTube.com allows users to not only upload videos to share with friends, but also add videos from their favorite sites like YouTube, Dailymotion, Veoh, MetaCafe, etc. and make money from the advertisements themselves. Doesn’t that seem like an appropiate solution?

Wishing you all the best in your journey to success,
Alan

I Learned from My Grandma that the Seeds of Greatness Are… by Denis Waitley

I Learned from My Grandma that the Seeds of Greatness Are… by Denis Waitley

My grandma, Mabel Reynolds Ostrander, and I shared one of those special
relationships as rare as a double rainbow. She was fifty-three when I was ten.
That’s when we planted our first “Victory” garden together during World War II. We
planted seeds together — in the soil — and in each other.

Grandma lived eighty-seven seasons without a complaint. I was forty-four when I last
saw her. But I remember every mince and lemon tart, every bite of “made from
scratch” apple pie, and every lingering wave of her hand as she stood (out of sight
or so she thought) behind the rayon, Priscilla curtains in the little house at 718
West Pennsylvania Avenue in San Diego, California, where I was born and raised. As
our station wagon full of kids and contentment would slowly pull away from the curb,
we would all look back at her and wave – and I would gaze at her fragile silhouette
through the rear view mirror, wishing I could frame her there forever, just that way
– wondering how many more Easter and Christmas dinners we would share.

Most of all, I remember my grandma and me planting seeds. We planted squash, beans,
corn, watermelons, beets, pansies, mums and other flowers. I’ll admit I rode my bike
those twenty miles each Saturday more for the bonus of the conversation and the
homemade pastries, than for the vegetables and flowers. But no matter how full I was
after I ate, I was always left hungry for more of the wisdom and optimism she shared
with me.

I’ll never forget the day we tasted our first harvest as a result of crossing a plum
tree with an apricot tree. The ripe fruit was pink, not purple like a plum, nor
orange like an apricot; but a combination of both. “Gee, do you suppose they’ll be
any good?” I asked. “Why of course they will be wonderful,” she chided. “Didn’t we
do the planting, nurturing and pruning?”

Sure enough, they were delicious, even though they were different than any fruit I’d
ever seen before. “That’s because they are uniquely unlike any other fruit you’ll
ever eat. They are plumcots!” she exulted. “You always get out what you put in,” she
continued as we sat under the tree eating most of what we had picked.

“Plant apple seeds and you get apple trees, plant acorns and you get majestic oak
trees, plant weeds and you will harvest weeds (even without watering), plant the
seeds of great ideas and you will get great individuals,” she said softly and
intently, looking directly into my eyes. “Do you understand what I mean?” I nodded,
remembering I’d heard her say the same thing before, in different ways.

I learned from my grandma that the seeds of greatness are not special genes,
dependent on the gifted birth, the inherited bank account, the intellect, the
skin-deep beauty, the race, the gender, or the status. The seeds of greatness are
attitudes and beliefs that begin in children by observing, imitating and
internalizing the lifestyles of significant role models and heroes.

“Model your thoughts and actions after men and women who have been passionate,
excellent, honest, unselfish and creative in their service to others,” my
grandmother had counseled. Armed with that affirmation, I ventured forth to sow and
reap my own legacy in life.

I’ve traveled the world to the seven seas.
I’ve been up at the top and down on my knees.
I’ve been blessed with abundance and plenty of weeds.
But I’ve never stopped caring about others’ needs.

As you tend your own garden, unlike any other.
Remember the words of my lovely grandmother.
“If you’re hoping to harvest a life of great deeds, remember you first have to plant
some great seeds.”

Denis Waitley

What you leave in your children is more important than what you leave to them.

Parents and grandparents have enormous power to influence their children’s lives and
directions. So, how can you and your children achieve the goals of self-confidence
and self-esteem?

Secrets Happy People know

Friday, April 18th, 2008

You know the old joke about the weather, right? Everyone talks about it but no one ever does anything about it. In the area of Self Help, our “weather” is definitely happiness. Everyone has it on their mind, and it comes up frequently in conversation. People want to talk about it, and they most definitely want to possess it, but when it comes to doing anything about it….. they kind of fade into the background. The reason might be that they don’t know HOW to just be happy.

I lean toward the belief that, as Abraham Lincoln said, “People are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” (That, of course, doesn’t include people who find themselves in the middle of grief, or a physical or mental illness.)

For most of us, however, I think that if you’re a happy person today - you’ll be a happy person tomorrow. If it takes a perfect balancing of planets, harmony in all relationships, and butterlies outside of your window to MAKE you happy, the happiness isn’t coming from within - it’s coming from without. That’s not a good thing, of course, because that’s forever changing.

Think about the people in your world. Some are happier than others, right? Some are so happy, being around them is about like watching an episode of Andy Griffith! Even when circumstances are foul, they’re generally light-spirited and smiling - maybe even joking around. The good news is that they weren’t born that way, so what happy people “have” is available for everyone. Basically, there are nine secrets that happy people have sewn into the fabric of their lives, probably without even realizing that they’ve done so. Three are below, the other six will be hot on their heels.

1. Happy people know, understand, and even embrace the fact that life isn’t perfect. They stopped expecting their days to sail by without any turbulance long ago. They’ve simply adapted their thinking and reactions to “ride” the waves rather than fighting against them. By contrast, unhappy people think that every turbulance, every bump, every misstep is a catastrophic event. It “wouldn’t” happen to other people - only to them. They think God has allowed this injustice and they, quite frankly, resent it very much. Even little events can snap the smile off of an unhappy person’s day - their balloon will burst just as easily over a slow internet connection as it would a flat tire. When bad things happen (which they tend to do), someone who is generally happy simply deals with it. No panic, no melt downs, no throwing blame around or raising their voice. Oh the drama! Granted, the smile will disappear as they get down to business, but it’ll return right after they’ve put everything back together again. Happy people know they can’t control life, but they CAN control the way they respond to life.
2. Happy people don’t live in the past. Some people feel unhappy simply because they won’t leave the past in the past. Happy people know that, for better or worse, the past is gone - living there, or even visiting too frequently, is a waste of time and energy. Some things have to be LET GO. You have to tell yourself - out loud even - “I’m letting this go before it proves to be my undoing.“ Happy people live in the present and realize that it can be a beautiful place if you accept it for what it is.
3. Although it may seem unusual, happy people are the best fighters in the world. If you think of the happiest person you know, the word “fighter” may not come to mind. After all, don’t we picture fighters as angry, determined, even mean? In the boxing ring, sure - but think about outside the ring. If someone is hit hard by one of life’s punches, and they refuse to go (or stay) down, how’d they find their feet? They fought for them, and they fought hard. The harder the punch, the harder to stand back up…but oh so worth the fight. Unhappy people are very weak. Usually they gave up long ago and got somewhat comfortable on the mat.

What some people don’t realize is that happy people feel the same pains the rest of the world does. If a happy person loses their dream home, for example, they most definitely register the pain. They cry the tears. They feel the loss. But they don’t let the situation win. They stand back up, dry their eyes, and look ahead to the great things that lie in the future. An unhappy person would use an experience like this as a crutch - a crutch that will only lead them to one of two places: Anger or Bitterness. Neither place is worth visiting, let alone moving into!

If you’re a “happy person,” give a big sigh of relief because you’ve learned one of the most important lessons in life. If you’re an “unhappy person,” give a big sigh of relief because you don’t have to stay that way.

Unless you want to.

Quote about commitment

Friday, April 18th, 2008

There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when it’s convenient. When you’re commited to something, you accept no excuses; only results. - Kenneth Blanchard

Jim Rohn - Great Leadership

Monday, March 31st, 2008
1. The Great Leadership Challenge by Jim Rohn (excerpted from Leading an Inspired
Life)

If you want to be a leader who attracts quality people, the key is to become a
person of quality yourself. Leadership is the ability to attract someone to the
gifts, skills, and opportunities you offer as an owner, as a manager, as a parent.
What's important in leadership is refining your skills. All great leaders keep
working on themselves until they become effective. Here are some specifics:

Learn to be strong but not impolite. It is an extra step you must take to become a
powerful, capable leader with a wide range of reach. Some people mistake rudeness
for strength. It's not even a good substitute.

Next, learn to be kind but not weak. We must not mistake weakness for kindness.
Kindness isn't weak. Kindness is a certain type of strength. We must be kind enough
to tell someone the truth. We must be kind enough and considerate enough to lay it
on the line. We must be kind enough to tell it like it is and not deal in delusion.

Next, learn to be bold but not a bully. It takes boldness to win the day. To build
your influence, you've got to walk in front of your group. You've got to be willing
to take the first arrow, tackle the first problem, discover the first sign of
trouble. Like the farmer, if you want any rewards at harvest time, you have got to
be bold and face the weeds and the rain and the bugs straight on. You've got to
seize the moment.

Here's the next step. You've got to learn to be humble but not timid. You can't get
to the high life by being timid. Some people mistake timidity for humility. But
humility is a virtue; timidity is a disease. It's an affliction. It can be cured,
but it is a problem.

Humility is almost a God-like word. A sense of awe. A sense of wonder. An awareness
of the human soul and spirit. An understanding that there is something unique about
the human drama versus the rest of life. Humility is a grasp of the distance
between us and the stars, yet having the feeling that we're part of the stars.

Here's a good tip: Learn to be proud but not arrogant. It takes pride to build your
ambitions. It takes pride in your community. It takes pride in a cause, in
accomplishment. But the key to becoming a good leader is to be proud without being
arrogant.

Do you know the worst kind of arrogance? Arrogance from ignorance. It's intolerable.
If someone is smart and arrogant, we can tolerate that. But if someone is ignorant
and arrogant, that's just too much to take.

The next step is learning to develop humor without folly. In leadership, we learn
that it's okay to be witty but not silly; fun but not foolish.

Next, deal in realities. Deal in truth. Save yourself the agony of delusion. Just
accept life as it is. Life is unique. The whole drama of life is unique. It's
fascinating.

Life is unique. Leadership is unique. The skills that work well for one leader may
not work at all for another. However, the fundamental skills of leadership can be
adopted to work well for just about everyone: at work, in the community, and at
home.

To Your Success,
Jim Rohn
